Descrizione del progetto

The goal of our project is to empower a broad range of research fields with a new class of particle detectors able to concurrently deliver excellent time and position resolution with high efficiency, at a high rate and in harsh radiation environments.
This ambitious goal is made possible by the implementation of several technological breakthroughs in the fabrication of the next generation of silicon detectors. The cornerstone of the project is the “low gain avalanche diode” design [1] that allows having silicon sensors with signals that are a factor of 10-20 larger than those of traditional silicon detectors while maintaining very low noise and fine segmentation.
These new detectors will be thin, ~ 20 microns, and produce very short signals, enabling the possibility of designing apparatuses with very low material budget and very high data acquisition rate.
The groups involved in the project include experts in detector design and simulation, in the modeling of radiation damage, and in beam testing campaign. The time frame, 3 years, suits well the goals of the project as it allows two full cycles of sensors design, production, and testing.
The project will also be a training opportunity in the art of detector design for the next generation of physicists.
