PE2_3 - Experimental particle physics with accelerators

Attività

In recent years, new ideas and experimental results have enabled impressive progress in the study of nucleon structure. Concepts such as TMDs make it possible to obtain information about the dynamics of quarks and gluons within the nucleon. All this has opened a new phase in the study of the fundamental structure of matter.

Experiments dedicated to the study of TMDs and to the 3D nucleon and hadron structure have been or are being performed at  several laboratories around the world: CERN-SPS (Switzerland), Jlab (USA), DESY-HERMES (Germany),  BNL-RHIC (USA), KEK-Belle (Japan).

Future experiments are now being planned at major international high-energy physics laboratories, accompanied by intensive experimental and theoretical research. These include the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at BNL in the US, and the AMBER experiment at CERN. This is the focus of the research acitivity of our group, which we carry on in close collaboration and synergy with other national and international experimental and theoretical groups.

We are also active in the development, production and test of detectors for high energy physics, in particular Multi Wire Proportional Chambers (MWPCs) and Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGDs), and of Front-End Electronics.

We are members of the International Collaborations AMBER, COMPASS, RD51 (CERN), EPIC at EIC (BNL).
